Cloud environments accumulate forgotten, unmanaged assets at scale, including abandoned VMs, orphaned storage buckets, stale IAM roles, and idle cloud functions, creating an attack surface that conventional security controls do not monitor. This structural risk maps to NIST SP 800-53 CM-8 and RA-5 control gaps and enables attackers to exploit cloud enumeration techniques against assets that defenders are not watching. Agentic AI is emerging as a practical remediation approach but introduces its own governance requirements.
