October 7, 2025The 6 gigawatt figure is just for show—what matters is the actual capacity that’s deployed and how much it’s used, not the theoretical power limits. The MI450 deployment starting in the second half of 2026 is over 18 months away, giving both companies plenty of flexibility if technical or commercial conditions change.
These announcements rarely meet their original timelines or scale.
The warrant structure (160M shares vesting on milestones) shows this is more of a strategic hedge than a hardware deal. OpenAI gains AMD capacity diversification to reduce dependence on NVIDIA; AMD gains validation and potential equity upside if OpenAI’s valuation keeps rising.
