NVIDIA and Emerald AI announced their collaboration with AES, Constellation, Invenergy, NextEra Energy, Nscale Energy & Power, and Vistra to develop what they’re calling grid-flexible AI factories. The announcement came during CERAWeek 2026, the energy industry’s most prominent annual gathering, and the venue matters as much as the news. This wasn’t an AI conference. It was an energy conference.

The central concept is demand response. Traditional data centers draw power from the grid as a fixed load. Grid operators manage around them. The NVIDIA-Emerald AI model inverts that relationship: AI factories would connect to the grid and participate as flexible assets, adjusting compute load based on grid conditions.

According to NVIDIA, the AI factories will use the company’s Vera Rubin DSX AI Factory reference design and DSX Flex software library. According to Emerald AI, its Conductor platform is designed to orchestrate computational flexibility alongside onsite generation and battery storage. The companies say the initiative is designed to allow AI factories to connect to the grid more quickly and operate as flexible grid assets. These are vendor-stated capabilities. No independent technical assessment exists at this time.

What the partnership confirms, independently corroborated by Wall Street Journal reporting: all six energy company names, the collaboration structure, and the grid-flexibility positioning. That’s the fact set investors and infrastructure planners can rely on.

Why this matters for the markets audience

The six energy company partners aren’t minor players. AES, Constellation, NextEra Energy, and Vistra are major utilities and power generators with significant grid relationships. Invenergy is one of the largest private renewable energy developers in North America. Nscale is an AI-native data center operator. This isn’t a pilot program with a single utility.

The demand-response model creates a revenue dynamic that doesn’t exist in traditional data center economics. If an AI factory can sell flexible load capacity back to grid operators, that changes the financial model. It also creates regulatory relationships, grid participation means FERC jurisdiction in the U.S. and utility commission relationships that standard colocation facilities don’t have.
