On June 12, 2026, Anthropic disabled public access to Claude Fable 5 and Claude Mythos 5 to comply with a US government export-control directive ordering it to suspend access for foreign nationals – a category that under US export-control law includes non-citizens such as green-card holders and visa workers, and Anthropic’s own foreign-national employees. Because nationality cannot be reliably verified in real time at the API layer, Anthropic suspended access for everyone.

Current status (as of June 22, 2026). Both models remain suspended. Anthropic’s status page still shows the suspension with no restoration entry and no announced return date. Through mid-to-late June the story was pushback and negotiation: researchers signed open letters demanding restoration, a bipartisan House letter (June 18) demanded the directive’s legal justification, and Anthropic and the administration were reported to be negotiating. Mid-June prediction markets priced roughly 58-67% odds of US restoration by July 1. Treat any specific ‘restored on a date’ claim as unconfirmed until Anthropic or its status page says so.
What was true at launch. Fable 5 and Mythos 5 launched June 9, 2026. Mythos 5 was made available only through Anthropic’s restricted Project Glasswing program with the US government (a launch-time design). Fable 5 shipped a documented design feature routing some flagged-topic queries to Claude Opus 4.8. Launch benchmarks were self-reported (SWE-Bench Pro 80.3%, FrontierCode 29.3%); treat them as self-reported, not independent or restoration-specific.
