Claude Fable 5 and Mythos 5 Remain Suspended Under US Export-Control Directive; No Restoration Confirmed

2 min read Anthropic Qualified Strong
Anthropic suspended public access to Claude Fable 5 and Claude Mythos 5 on June 12, 2026 under a US government export-control directive targeting foreign-national access. As of June 22, both models remain offline; Anthropic's status page shows no restoration. An earlier version of this brief incorrectly reported that Fable 5 had been restored on June 18 with nationality-based controls; that has been corrected.

Key Takeaways

  • Anthropic disabled all public access to Fable 5 and Mythos 5 on June 12, 2026 under a US export-control directive aimed at foreign-national access. The government cited national-security concerns and a possible jailbreak of Fable 5's cybersecurity safeguards; Anthropic disputes it. As of June 22 both remain suspended per Anthropic's status page; mid-June markets priced ~58-67% odds of US restoration by July 1. Correction: an earlier version reported a June 18 restoration with nationality controls; unverified and removed.

Claude Fable 5 / Mythos 5: Available vs. Suspended

Available (June 9-12, 2026)
Public API access to Fable 5; Mythos 5 via Project Glasswing only; Opus 4.8 fallback by design
Suspended (June 12, 2026 - present)
All public access disabled under a US export-control directive; no restoration announced as of June 22

Correction (June 22, 2026). An earlier version of this brief reported as fact that Anthropic had restored Claude Fable 5 around June 18-19, 2026, in some versions with new nationality-based access controls. That could not be substantiated. As of June 22, Anthropic’s status page lists both models as still suspended and no restoration has been announced. This brief has been corrected to the verified facts below.

On June 12, 2026, Anthropic disabled public access to Claude Fable 5 and Claude Mythos 5 to comply with a US government export-control directive ordering it to suspend access for foreign nationals – a category that under US export-control law includes non-citizens such as green-card holders and visa workers, and Anthropic’s own foreign-national employees. Because nationality cannot be reliably verified in real time at the API layer, Anthropic suspended access for everyone.

Verification

Qualified Anthropic statement (anthropic.com/news/fable-mythos-access); Anthropic status page; CNBC Corrected June 22, 2026: an earlier version reported an unverified June 18-19 restoration. Suspension facts are corroborated; restoration timing remains speculative.

The government cited national-security authorities and a concern about a method to bypass Fable 5’s safeguards on certain cybersecurity tasks. Anthropic has said it believes the action stems from a misunderstanding and is working to restore access.

Current status (as of June 22, 2026). Both models remain suspended. Anthropic’s status page still shows the suspension with no restoration entry and no announced return date. Through mid-to-late June the story was pushback and negotiation: researchers signed open letters demanding restoration, a bipartisan House letter (June 18) demanded the directive’s legal justification, and Anthropic and the administration were reported to be negotiating. Mid-June prediction markets priced roughly 58-67% odds of US restoration by July 1. Treat any specific ‘restored on a date’ claim as unconfirmed until Anthropic or its status page says so.

What was true at launch. Fable 5 and Mythos 5 launched June 9, 2026. Mythos 5 was made available only through Anthropic’s restricted Project Glasswing program with the US government (a launch-time design). Fable 5 shipped a documented design feature routing some flagged-topic queries to Claude Opus 4.8. Launch benchmarks were self-reported (SWE-Bench Pro 80.3%, FrontierCode 29.3%); treat them as self-reported, not independent or restoration-specific.

TJS note. This is a developing regulatory story. We corrected an earlier version that reported a restoration that had not occurred, and we will report a restoration only when confirmed by Anthropic’s official channels.
