EU AI Act · Compliance Timeline

EU AI Act deadlines: which rules apply to you, and when

The Act does not switch on all at once. Different obligations became binding, or become binding, on seven dates between 2025 and 2030, and which one is yours depends entirely on what your AI system does. Find your date with the checker, then see the full timeline with the exact article behind each one.

Transitional rules

What about systems already on the market?

Article 111 treats existing systems gently, with two important exceptions.

Legacy high-risk AI
High-risk systems (other than the Annex X large-scale IT systems) placed on the market before 2 August 2026 are caught only if they go through a significant change in design after that date. Systems used by public authorities must comply by 2 August 2030 regardless.

Art. 111(2)

Legacy general-purpose AI models
GPAI models placed on the market before 2 August 2025 must be brought into compliance with their Chapter V obligations by 2 August 2027. This is the only transitional deadline that falls on that date.

Art. 111(3)

Annex X large-scale IT systems
AI that is a component of the large-scale EU IT systems listed in Annex X, placed on the market before 2 August 2027, has until 31 December 2030 to comply.

Art. 111(1)

Evolution

Review and evaluation dates

Two dates that shape how the Act evolves, both in Article 112.

2 August 2028
First reports due
The Commission reports on the Annex III high-risk list and on the Article 50 transparency provisions, and every four years after.

Art. 112(2)

2 August 2029
First general review
The Commission reviews the whole Regulation and reports to Parliament and the Council, then repeats every four years.

Art. 112(3)

Proposed change

The Digital Omnibus: proposed, not yet law

You may have seen reports that some deadlines could move. Treat these as proposals.

The Digital Omnibus is a proposed amending package discussed as a way to adjust some high-risk timelines. As of the last check it is not enacted, so every date on this page still stands as written in Regulation (EU) 2024/1689. We track the status month by month in the news digests, so check there before you replan around any proposed change.

Questions

Common questions

It entered into force on 1 August 2024, but its obligations phase in over several years (Article 113). The prohibited practices and AI literacy duties applied from 2 February 2025, GPAI and governance rules from 2 August 2025, and most high-risk obligations from 2 August 2026. A few categories run to 2027 and 2030. Which date binds you depends on what your system does, which is what the checker above works out.

2 August 2026 is when the bulk of the Act applies, including the obligations for high-risk AI systems listed in Annex III (Article 6(2)) such as hiring, credit scoring, and biometrics. If you provide or deploy one of these systems, this is the date to plan against: conformity assessment, technical documentation, and registration all need to be done before you place it on the market.

Often not immediately. Under Article 111(2), high-risk systems already on the market before 2 August 2026 are caught only if they undergo a significant change in design after that date, with one exception: systems used by public authorities must comply by 2 August 2030 regardless. Legacy general-purpose AI models placed before 2 August 2025 have until 2 August 2027 (Article 111(3)).
