Mistral AI was founded in April 2023 by Arthur Mensch (ex-DeepMind), Guillaume Lample (ex-Meta AI), and Timothee Lacroix (ex-Meta AI). Headquartered in Paris, the company was built on a clear thesis: the frontier of AI does not require the largest possible model, it requires the most efficient one. In September 2023, Mistral made its debut with Mistral 7B, dropped not via a press release but as a torrent magnet link posted on X.
