Supply chain risk designations under US defense procurement rules aren’t reserved for foreign adversaries or counterfeit hardware. They’re a mechanism for excluding vendors whose products the DoD determines pose unacceptable risk to national security infrastructure. Applying that mechanism to a US-based AI company, one that has, until now, worked with defense-adjacent clients, is a different kind of move.
Tech Policy Press reported on March 19 that a Pentagon memo reportedly issued in early March 2026 formalized the designation.
