What Is Perplexity AI?
Perplexity is a RAG-first answer engine -- not a chatbot, not a traditional search engine. Every answer cites numbered web sources retrieved in real time. It is model-agnostic by design: the platform uses GPT-4o, Claude, its own Sonar model, and others depending on the query and the user's tier.
The company was founded in August 2022 by four researchers who studied Google's own history. The founding insight was direct: Larry Page's original vision for search was to give users answers, not links. Perplexity built that. The team's first product was Bird SQL (December 2022), a natural language to SQL tool for Twitter data. When Twitter cut API access in February 2023, the team pivoted to a universal answer engine -- a product they have been building since.
Perplexity is now expanding well beyond search. Perplexity Computer orchestrates 19 AI models as sub-agents to complete end-to-end projects. Model Council lets Max subscribers run three frontier models simultaneously -- including GPT-5.2 and Claude Sonnet 4.6 -- and compare answers side by side. The platform is becoming an AI operating system as much as a search product.
