Mythos Follow-Up: NSA Reportedly Using Anthropic's Restricted Model as UK AISI Confirms Access

New reporting adds significant detail to the Anthropic Mythos unauthorized access investigation: the NSA is reportedly among the organizations using the restricted model, and the UK's AI Security Institute has confirmed it holds access for safety testing. A third-party vendor used by Anthropic researchers has been identified as the breach vector, according to Bloomberg and Axios.

Three new material facts have emerged since the initial report. Taken together, they shift this story from a security incident into something more structurally interesting: a case study in what happens when a restricted frontier AI model has both authorized and unauthorized access problems at the same time.

First: the breach vector. According to reporting from Bloomberg and Axios, unauthorized access to Mythos Preview occurred through a third-party vendor used by Anthropic researchers. The specific vendor hasn’t been named publicly. This matters beyond the immediate incident, if the access pathway was a supply chain dependency rather than a direct platform breach, it raises questions about how Anthropic vets the vendors that touch its most sensitive systems.

Second: the NSA. Reports indicate the NSA is among the organizations with access to Mythos, reportedly using it for vulnerability scanning purposes. This claim hasn’t been confirmed by official statement from either the NSA or Anthropic, and it doesn’t appear in any formally attributed source in the available reporting. It warrants attention, not assertion.

Third: the UK AI Security Institute. According to Axios reporting, the UK AISI has confirmed it holds access to Mythos for safety testing. This is the most directly sourced of the three new developments. The UK AISI’s pre-deployment evaluation access to frontier models is established practice, their access to GPT-5 and Claude Opus has been previously reported, but Mythos is categorically different given its explicit cybersecurity focus and restricted deployment posture.

The tension here is structural. Mythos was withheld from public release because of its offensive cybersecurity capabilities. Simultaneously, it’s been deployed to government security agencies for vulnerability scanning, which is precisely the use case that prompted the restriction in the first place. Restricted access frameworks assume the restriction holds. A third-party vendor breach is the clearest possible evidence that it didn’t, at least partially.

Who gets access to restricted frontier models is a governance question the industry hasn’t answered systematically. Anthropic’s Mythos architecture, vetted organizations, government partnerships, restricted API access, is one answer. This week’s reporting shows that answer has failure modes.

For compliance and security practitioners: the third-party vendor angle is the actionable signal. If your organization deploys or evaluates AI from frontier labs, the vendor access surface is now a documented breach pathway in at least one high-profile case. Supply chain risk assessments for AI deployments should account for this. The Anthropic Preparedness Framework and voluntary self-restriction frameworks provide a baseline, this incident tests whether baselines are sufficient.

What to watch: Whether Anthropic issues a formal statement on the vendor breach specifics. Whether the NSA deployment reporting gets officially confirmed or denied. And whether the UK AISI’s Mythos access produces a published safety evaluation, which would be the first public technical assessment of the model.
